Advocacy & Support for Nurses
Returning to work after a significant injury, especially one incurred on the job, can pose substantial challenges for employees.
Kristy, a dedicated nurse, and a member of NPANZ serves as a prime example of this. Kristy sustained a shoulder injury in August 2023 while lifting a heavy nursing bag during her duties. Initially, she managed to continue working with light duties. However, by November 2023, her manager informed her that she would need to be fully off work until a comprehensive plan for her return to full fitness could be established. This directive came as a surprise and left Kristy uncertain about her future at her workplace.
This feeling of uncertainty led Kristy to reach out to NPANZ for advice. Kristy expressed her concerns to her assigned case manager regarding the management's handling of her injury. She highlighted that her manager was now seeking specific timelines for her return to full duties, which raised suspicions that she might be at risk of dismissal on medical grounds, though no such formal communication had been made.
A meeting took place between Kristy, her employee and our case manager. Discussions revolved around a potential return-to-work program and considerations for Kristy's future at the organisation. Alternatively, the possibility of Kristy resigning from her position was explored in a “without prejudice” conversation, as per Kristy’s instructions. In such a scenario, an exit package of 10 weeks was proposed by our case manager to ease her transition out of the organisation.
Simultaneously to these discussions, NPANZ was successful in negotiations involving securing financial support for Kristy, who had exhausted her entitlements after nearly a year on ACC. Despite initial uncertainties, a payment of $4100 was secured for her, providing much-needed financial relief.
How is the NPANZ so effective in defending members during workplace issues and disputes? Our experienced and professional case managers use our unique RED™ case resolution system.
Why is the NPANZ different? We believe that real change in healthcare STARTS with empowering frontline nurses, not bureaucrats.
