As healthworkers, you may already know that we have a huge increase forecast in deaths in our country over the next 20 years. There is a tsunami of baby boomers in their 3rd age already, and that’s before we think about younger people living with chronic and terminal illness.
The burden on our already-struggling healthcare system will be huge. We need to empower our communities to bring the care of our sick and dying back into everyday life. Just as we did for centuries before healthcare, hospitals and funeral directors became more accessible.
Following the examples of success shown in other countries around the world, Doulas are emerging here in NZ. Doulas add to the circle of care, for those who are on their final life’s journey. They are trusted companions to the dying, and their families, and the continuum of care has been proven to support better lives, better deaths, and better after-death experiences.
Treza’s journey to become a Doula
How she sees ‘death phobia’ in our communities and how to change that
How Doulas are improving deathcare around the world
How to empower people to live their best lives, by accepting and preparing well for their death
How Doulas can support you, as a healthcare provider, in your care of patients, wherever they are at on their journey.
Treza is an End-of-Life Doula. She brings to the role experience as a nurse, mother, business owner, and volunteer. The move into this compassionate calling has come about as a result of her wish to make a positive difference to those who are on their final life’s journey. Treza has trained with Mercy Hospice and Preparing the Way. Treza’s passion is to support those who wish to die at home, and to make sure people know what options they have to control their own life & death journey.
